Your Comments : 100 jobless

A sad state of affairs indeed. First the sugar industry, then dairy, now the fisheries and rice and pea mills. Government should intervene and help these industries before it is too late. Where are the incentives that the IG had promised? At least deliver on some of your promises. I would say this is bad management and shortsightedness. High time to throw in the towel and let those who can run the country come in via genuine elections!

Cougs struggle past Beavs

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Behind the wry smile, beneath the tan complexion, Tony Bennett's blood still simmered in a back hallway at Gill Coliseum on Thursday night. Yes, the 21st-ranked Washington State Cougars accomplished their ultimate mission – a 70-57 victory over Oregon State, sending the lowly Beavers to a school-record 14th consecutive defeat.

But the Cougars' play lacked sharpness, and their effort was void of spirit – two things the second-year coach won't tolerate.

Runs at crucial times, marked by the shooting of guards Taylor Rochestie (career-high 24 points) and Derrick Low (21 points) and the inside energy of Robbie Cowgill (nine points, 11 rebounds), carried the Cougars through this one.

"We got ourselves together, and came up with stingy defense at times, and made some plays," Bennett said.

A Prairie Home Companion: Altman's last ride

It's the end of the career of one of America's greatest filmmakers, with a strikingly diverse output that includes MASH (1970), Nashville (1975), The Player (1992), Short Cuts (1993) and Gosford Park (2001).

Lightly and in passing, A Prairie Home Companion situates Altman in the pantheon of great American popular artists, alongside Mark Twain, Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Chandler and Edward Hopper. All but Hopper hail from the midwest, like Altman.

The film is based on another midwesterner, Garrison Keillor's, real life radio show, the original "A Prairie Home Companion", a retro mix of music and dry humour which still regularly plays to live audiences on stage at the same time as it goes out over the air-waves. In some ways the film is structured like another night of the long-running American show.

Pink's Marriage Fades to Black

Pink's marriage was apparently not a feel-good time.

The pop-punk princess and her husband of just two years, the motocross-racing, Surreal Life-starring Carey Hart, have separated. And by the sounds of things, rather amicably.

"This decision was made by best friends with a huge amount of love and respect for one another," said the singer's publicist, Michele Schweitzer. "While the marriage is over, their friendship has never been stronger."

No reason was given for the split, which was first reported by People.

Queenslander Ceriann Davies bowls 'em over

UNSEEDED Australian Ceriann Davies claimed her second world indoor bowls title in four days when she beat England's Debbie Stavrou in the women's matchplay final today.

The 29-year-old sports psychologist from Queensland capped a dream world championship debut, having already partnered world No.1 David Gourlay to the mixed pairs crown on Sunday.

Welsh-born Davies downed favourite and defending champion Caroline Brown of Scotland in the quarter-finals before progressing to beat second seed Stavrou 11-7, 10-1 in the final at Hopton-on-Sea in England.

"At the end of the first end, I started to think of the winning post and went off a bit," admitted Melbourne Commonwealth Games silver medallist Davies.

"But then I got my head down.

"I'm feeling more a sense of relief than anything else.

Test knowledge, not cricket

ETHNIC groups have backed an overhaul of Australia's new citizenship test after reports that one in five applicants are failing it.

Of the 10,636 people who have taken the test since it was introduced by the Howard government in October, 2311 - about 20 per cent - failed.

Candidates must take a 20-question quiz on Australian history, values and way of life, and show adequate competence in the English language.

The West Australian newspaper reported that new Immigration Minister Chris Evans would review the citizenship test in the wake of the failure rate and could make substantial changes to it.

NSW Anti-Discrimination Board president Stepan Kerkyasharian was critical of the test's content, saying it should rely less on culture and more on practical knowledge about Australia.

Election Madness

He has worked all kinds of shifts, night and day, to barely keep his family going. His letters to me have always been angry, railing against our capitalist system for its failure to assure "life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness" for working people.

Just today, a letter came. To my relief it was not handwritten because he is now using e-mail: "Well, I'm writing to you today because there is a wretched situation in this country that I cannot abide and must say something about. I am so enraged about this mortgage crisis. That the majority of Americans must live their lives in perpetual debt, and so many are sinking beneath the load, has me so steamed. Damn, that makes me so mad, I can't tell you. . . . I did a security guard job today that involved watching over a house that had been foreclosed on and was up for auction.

Tough guy Thackeray: From the days of Raj

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray has been hitting headlines frequently since last week. But who exactly is Raj and how does he hope to politically benefit from the arrest? CNN-IBN looks for answers.

An arts graduate from Mumbai's JJ School of Art, Raj is the son of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's younger brother Shrikant Thackeray. But Raj chose early to follow the footsteps of his charismatic uncle.

Like Bal Thackeray he became a cartoonist but it was politics that most fascinated Raj.

He would accompany his uncle to all his rallies and public functions. Soon he began to address sainiks – displaying the same mannerism and aggression that his uncle was known for.

Raj was credited with the rise of the Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Sena, and widely seen as heir apparent to Bal Thackeray's throne.

ad:tech Keynote: State of the Industry

What started out as a political publishing brand has been a launching point for engaging users other interests as well, which spurred the launch of other topical verticals and tools to facilitate user interaction.

The more interactive tools you can give a community, the more time they spend on the platform. Community is key to platforms. AS an example, there were over 250k moderated comments last month on the Huffington Post and there are also 1800 bloggers.

Now the conversation turns to video. A year ago at ad:tech, the buzz was focused on video content and advertising. Moderator Randall Rothenberg asks, "Did that buzz live up to the promise?"

With examples like the one given by Suzie Reider involving the Opera channel launching on YouTube.com and attracting massive numbers of subscribers in just a few days, video is indeed meeting expectations.

With no long-term deal in place, K-Rod expects to be free agent after ...

When asked as he arrived in Arizona for spring training, K-Rod was asked if he thought 2008 would be his last season with the Angels.

"Yeah, probably," he told reporters. "If they wanted me here, they would have done something a long time ago. In the meantime, I have to put that out of my head and do my job."

Rodriguez backtracked slightly, noting that he does think the Angels want him around beyond this season.

"No, no, that's not what I'm saying, I don't want that in the paper," Rodriguez said. "It's just something I can't control."

At issue is a long-term contract for the Rodriguez. He faces an arbitration hearing Thursday where the 26-year-old pitcher has asked for $12.5 million in salary for the 2008 season while the Angels have countered with $10 million.

65 jobs at risk in SimplySwitch closure

Daily Mail and General Trust is to close price comparison website SimplySwitch just 18 months after acquiring the business in a deal worth £22m.

The Daily Mail owner admitted that all SimplySwitch's 65 employees could lose their jobs and a consultation on redundancies has already begun.

SimplySwitch, which allows customers to compare rates for utilities, credit cards, telephone and broadband services, is expected to shut on February 20 after DMGT executives said it was not receiving enough traffic to generate profits.

DMGT's digital division, Associated Northcliffe Digital, struck a £22m deal - £16.5m in cash - in August 2006 to acquire the website as part of a strategy to reduce the parent company's dependence on traditional print advertising revenue streams.

Stocks finish mostly flat on BofA report

Also, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve reported that its October manufacturing index came in weaker than expected. The report showed a slowdown in growth for the regional economy, and some inflationary pressures.

Sluggish economic data could help motivate the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut interest rates at its Oct. 30-31 meeting. Central bankers cut rates by a half point at their September meeting.

Oil prices continued their advance amid further tensions between Turkey and Kurdish rebels in Northern Iraq. Light, sweet crude rose $2.07 to settle at a record $89.47 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Disappointing results from BofA made some investors wary about quarterly results yet to arrive.

'Washington Mutual and Bank of America announcements reminds people that there is a housing issue out there, and that its tough to analyze on how bad it can get before it gets better,' said John C.
