County wades through IRS tax discrepancies

ERIE — Errors made on Neosho County's employer's quarterly tax returns from 2006 continue to haunt the county.

The Internal Revenue Service will be conducting a compliance review regarding the County's financial procedures. This is less involved than the examination review, commonly called an audit, that county officials thought was going to occur. An examination review is still a possibility depending on the results of the compliance check.

“She [IRS agent Allison Jones] said that she wanted to go back and come at this from a teaching-learning perspective," said County Clerk Randal Neely.

“If she can come down and help us through, working with us under the compliance check, I'm thrilled. Obviously, our end result is that we all want to be operating under the correct procedures."

According to County Coordinator Roger Daniels, the problem was discovered when the commissioners asked Schlotterbeck and Burns, Certified Public Accountants, Chanute, to look at the payroll after some county employees had expressed some concerns.

Jamie Lynn Spears spotted out of captivity

I don't know anyone my age, which is 26, that was still a virgin at 16...So, I am not judging her. The condom could of broke, and condom's are not full proof anyway. Neither is birth control....So, she got pregnant, big deal? Many kids are doing it now days...The only difference is she is sort of a celeb! If she's a whore more than half the teenagers in the world are whores too. As far as Lynn goes, It isn't her fault Jamie had sex. You can try to raise your kids right, but there are always outside influences, like friends that can take the best raised kids and turn them bad. So everyone get off their high horses....Britney was just fine as long as her mom was running her career, she was pretty and famous and if it weren't for her mom she wouldn't even have a career. Britney turned bad when she got out on her own and her mom couldn't control her anymore.

U.S. Program Accepted 1,324 Iraqi Refugees in Past Four Months

Correction to This Article This article incorrectly conflated two distinct provisions in the fiscal 2008 Defense Authorization bill concerning Iraqis who seek to come to the United States. One, a special visa program, would permit 5,000 Iraqis who had worked for the United States or U.S. contractors for at least one year to apply to enter this country; a second provision would allow Iraqis who worked for U.S. media or U.S.-based nongovernmental organizations and who feel threatened in Iraq to apply directly to U.S. embassies as part of the normal refugee-assistance program. .

Life imitating art for Clinton

While he loved getting his work noticed and understands what Clinton must be feeling, Downey said mentioning the skit might not have been her best move. “It might, on balance, make her look a little whiny," he said. “She might have been better off if other people pointed it out for them." MSNBC might have also been a source of some of Clinton's annoyance. Both Chris Matthews and David Shuster have apologized over the past months for remarks about the Clinton campaign, which brief ly considered backing out of the network-sponsored debate. Tuesday's debate was seen by 7.8 million people, the larg est audience in the network's history, according to Nielsen Media Research. Already, “Saturday Night Live" executive producer Lor ne Michaels has ordered Dow ney to write another skit on the campaign for this weekend's show.

An Odyssey to See Barack Obama

I pointed her to Real Clear Politics for great coverage of the important stories of the day, the latest polls, head-to-head matchups between Obama and McCain and Clinton and McCain, and more.

The time seemed to fly by because I was so enjoying talking to the numerous people around me. At 5 p.m., I asked the undecided student if he could get the Web on his cell phone. Yeah, why, he asked. Because Virginia's results are in, I said. The polls closed at 7pm. He looked up the news.

"They're saying Obama won Virginia." Quickly the word passed through the crowd snaking through our holding area. "Obama's won Virginia." No one was surprised, just excited.

At 6 p.m., the event volunteers told us we'd have to go through security. I had just been through security at the airport, and was surprised how much tighter the security was at Obama's event.

Moving forward: Area churches help newfound singles overcome divorce

Depression. Loneliness. Anger. Those are three of the emotional and spiritual struggles DivorceCare groups that meet at local churches are designed to help people overcome. The groups also help men and women deal with challenges such as raising children and handling finances as someone who is single again. Sid Norton is facilitator of the DivorceCare group at Trinity Worship Center in Burlington. He described the group as a "safe place" for someone going through separation or divorce. People sign an agreement that there will be no dating among group members while they are in the program, which leaves room for friendships and supportive relationships. Sometimes group members will go for coffee or dinner after a session. Group members learn how to deal productively with their problems.

Barrett oversees SRO program

Many times the SRO serves as a counselor for students, parents, and faculty as well.

Today there are two SROs at SCHS, two at HMS and one each at Liberty School, Cascade High School and Community High School. Two deputies alternate days at the Bedford County Learning Academy (formerly known as the alternative school). The SROs at Cascade and Community also are available if needed at the elementary schools next door.

"As the county schools program grows, then the SRO program needs to grow," Barrett said. "When they build the new Community High School they're going to need another SRO."

The men and women who serve as SROs in the county schools are: Deputy Cory Ewing (SCHS); Deputy Kim Brown (SCHS); Deputy Eric Henson (HMS); Deputy Tim Fox (Cascade); Deputy Tracey Harvey (Community); Deputy Bob Filer (Liberty); and Deputy Kevin Roddy and Deputy Mike Henry (Learning Center).
